Thanks, to what has become our dearest friend, Mr Tomtom (our navigational aid) we endured not a leisurely 40 minute drive, but rather 1.5 hour drive all around the Czech countryside, through cute little villages and windy narrow country roads that kept Louise on the edge of her seat (!) All because our dear Mr Tomtom had a fit when there was a closed road and was unable to figure a way around. In the end we sacrificed some mobile data and befriended Mr Google Maps. The final straw was that our new friend Mr Google Maps decided to send us down a 'pedestrian only' road which Mr Policeman did not like. After an interesting discussion and some waving of hands we were let go with out having to pay the mandatory 2500 Krona fine ($180 NZ:-/), on heading back up the road at a later stage (walking!) we observed that our new friend Mr Policeman, had apprehended not one but three miscreants who were flouting the pedestrian-only law, with much tut tutting we passed by these now somewhat poorer and unhappy looking culprits, much relieved that we too could have been somewhat poorer too.
The castle itself was worth every wrong turn and near miss with maniacs in flash sports cars (who don't move to the side), also crazy cyclists in lycra riding their bikes in the middle of the road, and trees that shouldn't be growing so close to the side of the road :-/
We had to take a tour which at first we were somewhat reluctant to do but in the end was appreciated by all, as the lady leading our group was really knowledgeable and helped us have a better understanding of life in a Roman Catholic dominated society during the middle ages, and of how castle dwellers and royalty functioned during this time. Something we would not have learned if we had strolled around on our own.
